They discussed continued cooperation between YEN and the school, and held ¡°Environment Day¡± every Friday with the school¡¯s Communist Young Pioneers group.

•Activity: Ms. Wu Fengshi from Global Environmental Institute (GEI) visited YEN. The two agreed to cooperatively hold a forum on Sustainable Forestry Financial Development Mechanisms in June 2005 in Kunming.

•Activity: Under the environmental education framework, YEN and the Kunming Birds Association have cooperated in offering numerous birdwatching and bird protection activities. The two organizations met to discuss experiences from past cooperation, in order to strengthen future projects. YEN and KBA agreed to jointly organize an international bird forum in Kunming in January 2006.

•Activity: Director of the University of Wisconsin Global Environmental Management (GEM) Program, Dr. Victor D. Phillips, came to Yunnan to discuss with YEN several potential cooperative programs for GEM students. Topics included Ecotourism and Nature Interpretation (Xishuangbanna and Lijiang), Sustainable Energy Systems (Simao village biogas fieldsites), Conservation and Environmental Education (Kunming), and Women¡¯s Empowerment (Lincang Prefecture). Dr. Phillips plans to bring a group of graduate students and professors to Yunnan this summer to take part in these activities.

•Activity: YEN carried out training for the Green Train program initiated by Global Village of Beijing (GVB) in conjunction with the green Olympics. During a one-month pilot program, YEN provided environmental education training to 225 railway workers on eight trains running between Beijing and Kunming. The purpose of the Green Train project is to use this important mode of transportation as a rolling classroom for increasing the strength and breadth of environmental protection promotion and raise public awareness. •Activity: Ken Tsuzuku, Chairman of Japan¡¯s Renewable Energy Promoting People¡¯s Forum (REPP) and other REPP representatives visited YEN to conduct an onsite investigation related to YEN¡¯s upcoming participation in Japan¡¯s Expo 2005 on renewable energy. The group made a field trip to a fieldsite in Chengjiang County to observe rural biogas usage and visited the Yunnan Province Rural Energy Office and Yunnan Normal University Solar Energy Research Institute (click for photo).

•Activity: Director of Global Environmental Institute (GEI) in Beijing, Ms. JIN Jiaman and Program Officer CHEN Mingjie, came to Yunnan for follow-up discussions with YEN about the upcoming workshop on Innovations in Forestry Finance and NGO Participation.

•Activity: FAO Technical Expert Meeting on Aquatic biodiversity, its nutritional composition, and human consumption in rice-based systems (click for details).

YEN Director Mr. CHEN Yongsong was the only invited participant from China to attend this meeting. Other representatives came from Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia,
Philippines, Thailand, the European Union, the Mekong River Commission, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (Italy and Asia region representatives).
Representatives included government officials, researchers, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and had expertise in fisheries resources,
health and nutrition, sanitation, and technical issues. The objectives of the workshop included:
Assess the share of rice-based aquatic biodiversity in the nutrition of rural people
Compile an inventory of edible inland aquatic species and varieties that people in rice-based ecosystems use and depend upon.
Describe nutritional value of the species/functional group used from rice-based ecosystems.
Analyse and compare the value of this aquatic rice-based biodiversity with other consumed food items with a view to determining its actual and potential role to prevent nutritional disorders.
Identify nutritional gaps and propose ways to address them.Develop a methodology for nutrition/aquatic biodiversity studies that can be applied in similar ecosystems in other regions.

Each club was responsible for carrying out environmental education and/or protection activities in 1-4 regions around the province. •Activity: International Forum on Environmental Public Policy and Sustainable Development Education in Higher Education

International Forum on Environmental Public Policy was organized by the State Environmental Protection Agency¡¯s Propaganda and Education Center and the Environment Institute of Beijing Normal University in order to promote environmental public policy formulation, increase public participation in policy formulation and implementation, research stakeholder rights and responsibilities, probe cost-benefit analyses of public policy, and improve public opinion hearings. At the same time, in order to fulfill the goals of the 2001-2005 Outline for National Environmental Propaganda and Education, promulgated by the SEPA, Ministry of Propaganda and Ministry of Education, and the organizers of the forum held a discussion with Chinese and foreign scholars and experts on to decide how best to promote sustainable development education in higher education. •Activity£º¡°Green Train¡± for raising public awareness about biodiversity in Southwestern China
¡°Green Train¡± will use of trains T61 and T62 between Beijing and Kunming as a rolling platform for promoting environmental protection and biodiversity preservation in keeping with the idea of a green Olympics for 2008. ¡°Green Train: Southwest China Biodiversity Public Education Project¡± is a joint project of Global Village of Beijing (GVB); the Environmental Conservation Office of the Railway Ministry; the Communist Youth League Propaganda Department of the Railway Ministry; the Kunming Railway Bureau; the Environmental Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the 29th Olympiad. The project is sponsored by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and organized by Yunnan EcoNetwork and other southwestern ecology and conservation organizations.
