一株树苗志愿者行动

Welcome to YEN (Yunnan EcoNetwork) Sapling Volunteers!

YEN Sapling Volunteers Concept

Chinese people have volunteered for tree planting each year. Most of them plant trees on the occasion of 12 March National Tree Planting Day. Others choose to do so at different times to meet the best season and for special projects such as sandstorm protection in the north of China, conserving fragile biodiversity in the southwest of China, and so on.

YEN began its sapling volunteer initiatives in the summer of 2002 to support sapling volunteer activities addressing environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods in rural areas in Yunnan Province, China. YEN is an independent non-profit NGO.

One core ideology of the sapling volunteer program is the linkage between the sapling's life and that of the human beings who plant it. Once it is planted, we hope the volunteer will commit to following the sapling's growth for at least fifty years.

One-on-One

Through the service provided by YEN Sapling Volunteers, the visiting volunteer commits to donating a sapling to the local community, then jointly taking part in the tree-planting process with a local volunteer. The local volunteer will then take care of the jointly planted trees from the close of the activity onward.

Activity Site Introduction

Lashihai Lake is located in Lashihai Wetland to the west of Lijiang City in northern Yunnan. With an elevation of 2,500 meters above sea level, the wetland represents an ideal habitat for some about 57 species of aquatic birds every winter. In 1998 the Yunnan Provincial Government designated the area a provincial nature reserve. Since then, the birds have gradually increased, and their numbers according to local record in 2001 were about 100,000.

The lake is also one of the drinking water resources of people living in Lijiang city.

In recent years, faced with a booming local economy, especially tourism, the Lashihai area is facing more and more pressure than ever before. The wetland is shrinking, and the lake waters from which local villagers make their living have gradually retreated due to an increase in tourist facilities.

YEN Sapling Volunteers aims to conserve the wetland and the lake by assisting volunteers far and near in planting trees that can safeguard valuable natural resources and help provide a sustainable source of livelihood for local people.

A sapling seems invisible

It symbolizes a start

And an endless hope

By turning a tree into a forest

A forest converges a sea of green lives on the planet
