February 10, 2011: Eighty-four students hailing from schools across the United States and Europe along with accompanying professors visited Yunnan EcoNetwork’s Green Education Center to learn about biodiversity and sustainable development in both the area around Lashi Lake as well as all of Yunnan Province. The students learned of the importance of the Lashi Lake wetlands as well as the challenges posed by human development and its impact on the ecosystem. In learning about the wetlands surrounding Lashi Lake, the visiting students took advantage of the opportunity to contribute to GEC’s mission by helping to remove anthropogenic waste around the banks of Lashi Lake.
The students were introduced to biogas and learned how biogas can be a valuable source of renewable energy as well as how using biogas to replace other forms of energy could cut down on carbon emissions. The visiting students witnessed GEC’s biogas system, including the cistern where biogas is created as well as the kitchen were biogas is used. They also visited a nearby Naxi household, where they witnessed how the Naxi ethnic minority live and their use of biogas.
